The stage is set for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Orissa government and Jindal Synfuels for setting up of a Rs 60,000 crore coal-to-liquid (CTL) project by the latter.
"The Chief Secretary will take a final call on signing of the MoU between the state government and Jindal Synfuels during a meeting scheduled for March 29. The meeting is meant for finalization of the draft MoU already prepared”, an official source told Business Standard.
The CTL project proposed by Jindal Synfuels, a subsidiary of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL), was cleared by the state High Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) in May last year.
The environment impact study (EIA) for the CTL project has been completed.
Work on the project is expected to begin next year after receipt of environment clearance. The CTL project will have the capacity to produce 80,000 barrels of oil per day and it will be commissioned in five years.
The CTL plant will produce petrol, diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel.
The project is coming up at Durgapur in Angul district. The company would set up a 1100 MW captive power plant (CPP) at the site.
The project needs around 4000 acres of land and it has been allocated 90 cusecs of water from the Mahanadi river. The company intends to acquire land on its own for this ambitious project.
The project is expected to employ 30,000 persons directly and indirectly. Another CTL project, being developed by Strategic Energy Technology Systems Ltd, will come up in Dhenkanal district at a cost of Rs 45,000 crore. This CTL project too, would have a production capacity of 80,000 barrels per day and create about 6400 direct jobs. The project needs about 4000 acres of land.
