The M P Birla Eye Bank was inaugurated in Kolkata under the aegis of Priyamvada Birla Aravind Eye Hospital on August 2, 2009. More than 100 people have already pledged their eyes to the Eye Bank. H V Lodha, trustee, Priyamvada Birla Aravind Eye Hospital, said that an eye donation centre was started at M P Birla Eye Clinic in 2005 and now “We have a registered eye bank for us”.
He further said, “We have recently got approval from the government of West Bengal to start the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HCRP) at Sambhu Nath Pandit Hospital where a 24x7 Help Desk will function to educate people and collect a substantial number of Corneo-Scleral Rims for transplantation”.
