CPhI, world's largest pharma fair, is set to debut in India. The 16- year-old pharma ingredients exhibition, organised by CMP Information, a division of the UK-based United Business Media, is expected to provide a wide-range of opportunities for the fast-growing Indian pharmaceutical industry.

The selection of India as the next destination for the mega event signifies growth of the Indian drug sector and the interest shown by global companies on Indian capabilities and its knowledge-based economy. After the turn of CPhI Worldwide, CPhI China and CPhI Japan, it is the turn of Mumbai to host the prestigious event.

CPhI India, which is also party to the country's biggest annual pharmaceutical meet "" Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC) "" will attract more than 1,500 companies from 110 countries.

As a global pharmaceutical business interactive platform, the show envisages $2.1 billion worth business prospects for the Indian industry in the form of strategic alliances, manufacturing and supply contracts, joint ventures and research and development partnerships.

Christopher Eve, senior vice-president, CMP Asia, said since India had a prominent place in the global pharmaceutical map, selection of Mumbai as the next venue was a forgone conclusion to develop the brand.

"Hosting such a great event will certainly bring together all sectors of the pharma community," he added.

Dinesh B Mody, chairman, Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) and director of JB Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, said with CPhI coming to India the pharmaceutical industry would get a platform to propagate itself on the international map.
