Clad in a dhoti-kurta, Rajendra Singh (65) was among the first persons, who arrived to book a Nano car at a Tata Motors showroom here today.

Coming from a backward Sahaspur area, 50 km from here, Singh keenly watched the key features of the world’s cheapest car before submitting the form. “I like this car. And it is not very expensive also,” said Singh, a farmer.

Like Singh, scores of prospective buyers rushed to various centres in the morning on the first day of the booking in Uttarakhand, the home of the small car.

Tata Motors dealers said the response was good and that they were receiving hundreds of queries every day about the booking.

Nearly 2,000 forms have been sold so far in Dehra Dun alone, they said. “We are getting good response for Nano,” said Rakesh Oberai, the dealer for Tata Motors in Dehra Dun.

Customers were also seen queuing up at various bank branches in the city including the State Bank of India, the main bank for the booking of Nano. “The craze for Nano is growing,” said Mahip Kumar, SBI deputy general manger.

In other cities of the hill state like Uttarkashi, Haldwani and Haridwar, there was similar enthusiasm.

The Pantnagar plant has a capacity to produce 50,000 Nano cars. The company has assured the state government that it would set up a permanent plant for Nano here.
