With an aim to develop altogether a medical device cluster near Ahmedabad, Central Government plans to bring National Centre for Excellence on Medical Devices (NCEMD) at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), a top official said today.
According to Ashok Kumar, secretary, department of pharmaceuticals, Central Government, the government has got a pre-feasibility study conducted on developing medical device green field cluster near Ahmedabad by IL&FS. "We shall be meeting Gujarat chief secretary to demand land for this proposed cluster," Kumar said.
Out of six Pan-India NIPER centres each one has its core area of specialisation, and Ahmedabad centre has medical devices as its core competence area, therefore we are also considering to bring NCEMD here, he said.
Kumar was speaking here at an inaugural function of pre-clinical and clinical facility at the BV Patel Pharmaceutical Education and Research Development (PERD), the mentor institute of NIPER.
The move is expected to boost the existing USD 2 billion market of medical devices in India and create skilled workforce of around 500,000 technicians, researchers and scientists in next one decade for which NIPER will be the resource, Kumar said.
