This would also help the state of Tamil Nadu to address its power shortage, which is currently around 4,000 Mega Watt (MW).
NLC, a Nav Ratna Public Sector Enterprise, under Ministry of Coal at present, operates three open cast lignite mines at Neyveli and one at Barsingsar, Rajasthan with a total capacity of 30.60 million tonne per annum and three thermal power stations at Neyveli and one at Barsingsar with a total installed capacity of 2,740MW.
The company achieved lignite production of 56.01 lakh tonne (LT) against 51.408 LT achieved during the corresponding period of the previous year, an increase of 8.95%. Power generation was 4,575.75 Million Units (MU) against 4,045.10 MU achieved during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering a growth of 13.12%.
The Corporation has said TPS-II Expansion (500MW) at Neyveli and a coal based power plant of 1000 MW at (NTPL) Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu are under implementation. Both these projects are expected to be completed in the year 2013-14. Thus the Power Generating Capacity will be raised to 4,240 MW.

NLC is also diversifying into fuels other than lignite by setting up coal-based power plant (1,980 MW) at Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh and coal-based coastal power plant (4,000 MW) at Sirkali, Tamil Nadu. It also proposes to set up power projects based on renewable energy ie. wind and solar.
In respect of coal-based power plant at Uttar Pradesh, a joint venture vompany was formed with UP Government as Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL) and is in advanced stage of sanction by GOI.
With its expansion activities, the company is poised for substantial growth in the years to come. NLC’s mining capacity (lignite & coal) is expected to more than double and its power generation is expected to be at least three folds of its present generating capacity.
Meanwhile, NLC reported 20% growth in sales during the third quarter at Rs 1,255.70 crore as compared to Rs 1,045.99 crore for the same period in the previous year 2011-12.
Profit After Tax stood at at Rs 221.65 crore as compared to Rs 184.94 crore for the same period in the previous year 2011-12 and registered a growth of 19.85%.
