The government today said that of the 16 Navratna PSUs, only two -- NMDC and National Aluminium Company -- have no regular chairmen in position.

"In two Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), namely, NMDC and National Aluminium Company, a regular Chairman is not in a position on date," Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Praful Patel said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

There are 16 Navratna PSUs, including BHEL, GAIL, Power Grid Corporation of India and Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

The board of directors of 'Navratna' PSUs can take investment decisions up to Rs 1,000 crore without approval from the government.

Replying to another query, Patel said Tyre Corporation of India Limited (TCIL) with a unit in Kankinara West Bengal is being disinvested under the TCIL (Disinvestment of Ownership) Act, 2007.

The sick company has not manufactured tyres during December 2011 and January 2012, he said.

But, it has paid salaries to its employees till August 2011, he added.

Further, he said, the government has been periodically providing financial assistance as non-plan loan to loss-making PSUs, under the Department of Heavy Industry, which have not been able to pay wages and statutory dues to its employees.
