No weekly closure for retail shops in Telangana

Retailers Association in the state welcomes the move

BS Reporter Hyderabad
The Retailers Association of India (RAI), a nodal agency for modern retail in India, today welcomed the Telangana government’s decision to do away with weekly closure of retail establishments as mandated by the Shops and Establishments Act.

The state government had issued orders earlier this month permitting all shops and establishments to keep open all 365 days of the year provided they maintain 8-hour working day and a weekly holiday for employees besides keeping a separate wage register for the overtime work.

“The RAI delegation had met chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and had a series of meetings with the industries secretary. As a result of our representations, the government of Telangana has made a significant allowance for the retailer that is in the interest of both, the business as well as the consumers,” the association said.

In his statement, RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan said the decision would also help the state economy by creating more employment in the sector.

The state government has made it mandatory for the employers to arrange transport for women employees in case they required to work beyond 8.30 pm.
