The 1020, with a 41-megapixel camera, is likely to be priced at around Rs 48,000

Nokia on Thursday unveiled its flagship Lumia 1020 that comes with a 41-megapixel camera in India. But unlike the earlier launches, the handset maker has not revealed the price of the device, citing currency fluctuation as the reason for not announcing the price.

The price of the device will be announced on October 10, a day before Nokia makes it available in retail stores. According to market sources, the device is likely to be priced at around Rs 48,000. It is currently selling in other markets for $800. HomeShop18.com has announced pre-booking for Nokia Lumia 1020 for Rs 5,000.

The device comes with a Carl Zeiss lens, equipped with Nokia’s proprietary PureView imaging technology. The camera will also have optical image stabilisation and six element lens and uses over-sampling technology to process images, according to the company, claiming the device is able to produce some of the sharpest images delivered by any digital camera.

“The response to the Nokia Lumia range in India has been extremely encouraging. Nokia Lumia 1020 is a stunning device with imaging capabilities like no other smartphone. We believe it will further strengthen Nokia’s leadership in imaging, which today plays a pivotal role in the lives of consumers,” said P Balaji, managing director, Nokia India.

The company had, in July, unveiled the phone at an event in New York. The Nokia Lumia 1020 comes equipped with a 4.5-inch display, which is almost the same size as the one on the Lumia 920 and Lumia 925.

“It is our premium smartphone and our target market is people who value great imaging experience. There are 50 per cent people who click pictures with their smartphones and a fraction of those are camera lovers, who are our target audience for this phone,” said Nokia India, Middle East and Africa director (smartphone devices) Vipul Mehrotra.

Nokia’s latest device runs on Windows 8 and has 32 GB on board storage. The company has also tied up with Vodafone and will offer 2GB of 3G data usage free of cost for two months. Customers will also get an application voucher worth Rs 1,000 with the phone.

Nokia, in partnership with New India Assurance, will also offer a year-long complimentary insurance cover at all leading stores.

Other smartphones with powerful cameras available in India are Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and Sony Xperia Z1.
