Nicholas Piramal India (NPIL) is planning to invest about Rs 250 crore to expand its diagnostic chain, Wellspring, in 75 urban centres across the country in the next two years.

"We are aiming to add another 40 labs to the existing 35 labs across the country and cover 35 cities in the next 2 years," NPIL chairman Ajay Piramal said today. The company has opened a Wellspring lab in New Delhi.

The labs would be well-equipped to perform over 4 million pathology tests every year including tests related to biochemistry, immunology, hematology, histopathology and micro-biology, Piramal said.

He added, besides setting up diagnostic centres, NPIL would also focus on strengthening the sample collection process to ensure samples do not move about extensively.

About 95% of the routine diagnostic tests could be done in these laboratories, while for the remaining 5%, NPIL would
have more sophisticated labs where the samples could be brought in, he said. (PTI)
