NTPC, CIL to finalise JV for Brahmani

NTPC Limited will finalise the joint venture agreement with Coal India to develop the Brahmani block in Jharkhand which has an estimated reserve of 1,100 million tonnes, soon. Speaking at the signing of the Fuel Supply Agreement with CIL, R S Sharma, chairman and managing director, NTPC Limited, said, “We are looking forward to signing the JV agreement with CIL in June, following which further exploration work will be done.”

N C Jha, director, technical, CIL, said,“The Brahmani coal block is expected to have estimated reserves of 1,100 million tonnes according to initial regional exploration, but detailed exploration work needs to be carried on after the formation of joint venture. We will carve out projects then.”

 

A 4,000 mw thermal power plant can be set up at the pithead if the coal block is developed. The investment could be to the tune of Rs 22,000 crore. NTPC, which is eyeing the renewable sector in a major way, might also consider West Bengal if opportunities in the renewable sector exists. The company plans to commission 100 mw of wind energy projects by the end of March 2012.

It has signed MoUs with state power utilities in Karnataka for wind energy projects and is also looking at Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

The company is taking active interest in Solar energy and is in the process of preparing detailed project reports for Andhra Pradesh.
