Test preparation platform, OnlineTyari has raised Rs 5 crore from Tandem Capital, 500 Startups, Vikram Chachra of Eight Capital, Aloke Bajpai of IxIgo and Mohandas Pai, among others.

The funds would be used for expansion and further strengthening its technology, it said. The app allows people to prepare for job-oriented tests, including civil services, banking services, UPSC and GATE.

People buy question banks, online tests, articles and e-books on the platform and also collate notes to prepare for competitive examinations.

Mohandas Pai, Chairman, Manipal Global Education and ex-CFO, Infosys, says, “The demand for educational content across the language spectrum is tremendous. OnlineTyari is already making a powerful impact with their immediate focus on the over 10 million Indians writing entrance exams for government jobs. With their continued focus on multilingual quality content, they can reach every Indian student; and that is a unique and valuable mission.”

OnlineTyari was started in 2014 by Vipin Agarwal and Bhola Ram Meena of IIT Kanpur. Its app in India – both on Android and Windows platforms - has seen over 2 million downloads. It claims an active user base of more than 2 lakh people across India.

The app caters largely to the vernacular speaking population of India and is currently available in Hindi and English. The company plans to make the platform available in other languages too.

Vikram Chachra, Co-founder & Managing Partner, Eight Capital added, “We are going to witness a massive shift to regional language content consumption with the next 350 million smartphone adopters in India. With its focus on regional languages, OnlineTyari is very well-positioned to benefit from this huge tailwind of new users coming online.”

Vipin Agarwal, Co-founder & CEO, OnlineTyari, says, “OnlineTyari aims to revolutionise the $20 billion market need for education services in India. This is our contribution towards bringing literacy and livelihood to everyone and towards achieving a truly inclusive Digital India Mission.”

Over one crore people appear for entrance exams for government jobs every year, often with little access to good quality education content in their native language.  OnlineTyari bridges this digital divide by making education content available on the mobile phone of every person across India.

Correction: An earlier version of this article mentioned that the firm raised $5 million, when in fact it's Rs 5 crore.
