Order against Salem plant revoked by TNPCB, says JSW Steel

BS Reporter Chennai
JSW Steel today has said that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has revoked the order to close its plant located in southern Tamil Nadu.

The company said that at Salem works, during a maintenance work at one of the Blast furnaces, there was minor leakage of Blast furnace gas and the affected employees working on maintenance jobs have been taken to hospital and treated and there are no fatalities.

Consequently, the Salem plant was under shut down from September 28, 2015 following a directive from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) for around two weeks and the plant re-started on October 10, 2015 on revocation of closure notice by the concerned authorities.

In an announcement to stock exchange today, the company said following the report submitted by a mulch-discplinary committee constituted by the Board and the representations made by the company, the closure order was revoked.

JSW Steel Ltd, part of the JSW Group part of the O P Jindal Group, has an one million tonne capacity steel plant at Salem. Company's officials have said that during the closure no loss would have been incurred considering it has enough stocks on hand to meet the demand.

The plant was running at a capacity of around 75-80 per cent due to market condition.

The company is planning to invest around Rs 1,025 crore to increase the capacity to 1.3 million tonnes from one million tonnes now and to modernise the two plants. One plant is 20 years old and another one is eight years old.
