Lighting company Philips Lighting and Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), the nodal body of interior  designers in India, on Monday announced their academic partnership to offer a professional certificate course in light and lighting (technology & application) for architects and interior designers. Pune is the first city to offer this  three-day certificate course for the members of the IIID Pune Regional Chapter. Philips will conduct this course  in different IIID chapters across India and will provide the course curriculum, content, faculty support, product samples and other teaching aids.

This is as per the Philips' global policy of Philips has set up Lighting University across the locations in the world.  This is first of its kind of tie up with IIID in India.

Addressing the media, Sumit Joshi, Senior Director, Marketing, Philips Lighting India, said, “Light today is no longer purely functional, something to switch on and off as required. Today, light is being used in all sorts of ways to create the desired backdrop to our lives, whether to relax and unwind, to play, or to work, lighting can be used to create the right mood and ambiance. With this MoU, we hope to enhance the interior designers’ and architects’ ability to bring together both art and science of lighting and give the perfect finishing touch to their work”.

Announcing the MoU, Sudeshna Mukhopadhyay, Director, Philips Lighting University, said, “In sync with our  ongoing endeavors to partner with major professional institutions in the country, we have now entered into a formal partnership with IIID. This initiative will prove to be a vital link in bridging the gap that exists in the industry professionals’ technical know-how of the latest lighting technologies such as LED”.

This partnership will span over a three-year period covering four sessions every year for students, teachers and young practicing designers. On completion of the course, all participants will receive a joint certificate from IIID and Philips.

This program marks the advent of Philips Lighting University into professional courses in lighting for stakeholders and business partners. The Lighting University was introduced in April 2011 by Philips Lighting with the objective of using learning as a force to help drive the industry transformation and to also maintain the company’s competitive edge.

Rohini Mani, executive committee member, IIID said, “Good lighting is all about moods & emotions which complements the design in a way that it creates different idioms for the static space. Hence, the course is very important for designers to understand the technical & creative nuances of lighting. With burgeoning demands for state of art designs as to compete globally; proper knowledge in lighting is extremely essential.”
