Philips unveils mobile DVD player

Philips Electronics India Limited, a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics, launched its mobile DVD player PET 710.
 
"This product is targeted at parents, who own cars and drive their kids around in them. The equipment can be used in multiple vehicles. It can be taken wherever one goes," said R Swaminathan, senior manager, consumer electronics division of Philips India Limited, during the launch press conference.
 
Claiming to be the first of its kind in India, the PET 710 weighs 900 gm with a seven-inch wide screen and a rechargeable battery with 2.5 hours of standby time. Priced at Rs 19,990, the mobile DVD player comes with two headphone connections.
 
The Philips mobile DVD player, which is currently available in only one model, plays all formats like DVD, video CD and MP3-CD and can be used with or without connecting to a big screen TV.
 
Philips plans to advertise in auto and lifestyle magazines as well as tying up with car showrooms across the country, according to Gautam Dalal, manager, consumer electronics division of the company.
 
The DVD sales volume of Philips touched five lakh in 2004 and the projection for 2005 is around eight lakh.
 
The company's revenues from consumer electronics division alone was Rs 900 crore last year and is expected to touch Rs 1,300 crore revenues this year.
