Plan panel to study impact of Chinese power equipment imports

The Planning Commission is assessing the impact of cheap Chinese power equipment imports that are posing threat to the domestic manufacturers like BHEL, a senior government official said.

"The Planning Commission is examining that issue (threat to the domestic industry from Chinese power equipment imports)... It will come out with a paper how the domestic industry is affected and what remedial policy measures are to be taken," Heavy Industries Secretary Satyanarayana Dash told PTI.
    
He, however ruled out any immediate steps like restrictive duties to check the import of Chinese equipments.
    
About 33 per cent of the equipments in the thermal plants in the country are Chinese, according to official data.
    
During the 12th Plan period (2007-12), out of the total orders of about 45,000 mw placed so far, orders for thermal capacity of about 14,000 mw have been placed on Chinese manufacturers and suppliers, according to the data.
    
During the 11th Plan period, out of the likely thermal power capacity addition of 61,237 mw, equipments for about 21,000 mw are being imported from Chinese manufacturers.
    
Similarly, out of the total orders of about 15,000 mw for hydel projects, orders for 464 mw have been placed on Chinese manufacturers/suppliers.
