The Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has ordered shut down of four sponge iron units of Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL), situated at Rengali in Sambalpur on environmental damage concerns.

It has also directed shut down of the company’s roller mill and ordered immediate stop of electricity supply to the unit.

The OPCB had sent closure notices to BPSL and Bhushan Steel Ltd (BSL), another Bhushan Group company at Meramundali in Dhenkanal, five days ago. The action against BPSL on Monday was taken after the pollution regulator received unsatisfied response from the company, according to sources.

BPSL currently operates 2.3 million tonne per annum integrated steel and power plant in the state including 376 Mw power plant, a coal washery, two CSP Plant, a blast furnace, a coke oven plant, a sinter plant, an oxygen plant, a steel making and lime and dolomite plant, besides a cold rolling mill and eight sponge iron units, each having 500 tonne per day capacity.
