To monitor power transmission lines, state-run Power Grid Corp is planning to use robotics technology and deploy helicopters for aerial patrolling.

Power Grid operates and maintains over 87,000 circuit kilometres of EHV (Extra High Voltage) transmission lines.

In a statement, Power Grid said it carried out a demonstration of the robotics technology application on 400 kV transmission lines in live line condition "for the first time in India at Ballabhgarh, Haryana".

The technology would facilitate live line visual and infrared inspection of transmission line conductors/ground wires, which would help in assessing condition of transmission lines in a better manner.

Power Grid has signed an agreement with Canada-based Hydro Quebec for demonstration of their robotics technology on the entity's transmission lines.

According to the statement issued today, Power Grid is planning to deploy helicopter for aerial patrolling of transmission lines apart from using robotics technology for condition monitoring of transmission line conductors and other accessories.

Power Grid plans to add about 50,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines in next five years.
