Power, lignite capacity to increase: NLC

Power capacity to see 1.5 fold increase by end of 12th Plan period

Press Trust of India
Neyveli Lignite Corporation today said power generation and lignite mining capacity will be increased before March 2017, the end of the current 12th Five Year Plan.

NLC Chairman and Managing Director B Surender Mohan said this while addressing a meeting at the corporate office here.

He said that after completing ongoing projects of 500 MW thermal expansion unit II, 1,000 MW Tuticorin project, renewable energy projects like solar 10 MW project and wind farm project of 50 MW, power generating capacity will be increase from 2,740 MW to 4,240 MW.

Lignite mining capacity would be enhanced to 32.10 million tonnes per annum from 30.6 MTPA.

Land acquisition and restructuring mine was not a problem for NLC as it has the cooperation of the state government, he said

Mohan said Rs 58 crore has been sanctioned in 2014-15 under NLC's Corporate Social Responsibility policy for various projects.

He claimed NLC is contributing significantly towards environmental protection and in maintaining ecological balance. Around 20 million trees have been planted around Neyveli and production units, which helps maintain a clean environment, suppress dust, noise control and lowering the atmospheric temperature.

Keeping in view the May 20 accident, in which one person died and six others sustained burn injuries after the steam pipeline exploded due to heavy pressure today, he said all employees and contract workers should strictly adhere to safety measures.

NLC directors Rakesh Kumar (finance), S Rajagopal (power), M S Ravindranath (mines) S Boopathy (planning), and a large number of officers and workers participated in the meeting.
