Powmex Steel reopens after 3 months

Powmex Steel, a unit of Graphite India Ltd, at Titlagarh in Bolangir district resumed production today after being shut down for three months following the death of its Deputy General Manager due to labour unrest.

Meanwhile an amicable settlement has been reached between the striking workers and the company management facilitating reopening of the plant.

The company has agreed to pay additional Rs 900 per month to the contractual workers and Rs 1,900 per month to the permanent workers following intervention of the state labour department.

Besides, the company will provide additional medical insurance coverage and incentive up to Rs 500 per month to the workers depending on the production and sales, said state labour and employment minister, Pushpendra Singh Deo.

 

“We are ecstatic about the reopening of the company as the livelihood of 550 families depends upon the company, said a company labourer. All the pending cases between the workers and the company will be settled amicably and steps will taken at the earliest to pay the arrear salaries to the workers for the last 3 months, said Gopal Srinivasan, Executive Director, Powmex Steel.
