R-ADAG's Flag Telecom ties-up with Omantel

Flag Telecom Company, a subsidiary of R-ADAG's Reliance Communications, has tied up with Oman Telecommunication Company (Omantel), to make Oman an internet transit point and telecommunication link between West Asia and Africa.

Two agreements were signed by Mohammed Bin Ali Al Wahaibi, executive president of Omantel and Punit Garg, executive president of Flag Telecom, in the presence of Anil Ambani, chairman of Reliance Communications.

One of the agreements is to make Oman a link between Africa and the Middle East in Flag's loop cable project. Under the project, relating to the extension of communication links to Egypt and Hong Kong via marine cables with multiple landings in the Gulf region. Omantel will seek to extend the cable through a network of marine cables to converge at Seeb and Khasab in Oman.

The second agreement, to start in September, will be to make Oman an internet transit point, catering to 12 countries including members of the Gulf Cooperation Council. It will also provide leased circuit services as well as multi-party labelling system, the fastest in electronic telecommunication technology.

The signing of the MoUs was part of Omantel's keenness to boost its investments and to make the country a global communication hub, Al Wahaibi said.

As per the agreement, Flag Telecom would also lay a marine cable for the Oman-based company.
