Reliance Communications (RCom) has added around 11.3 million new subscribers in the January-March quarter, increasing its total subscriber base to 72.6 million by the March end.

The subscriber addition, one of the largest for a telecom company, was following the company’s launch of GSM services on December 30, 2008. Moreover, it has also helped the Anil Ambani group company to consolidate its number two position.

In terms of number of subscriber, Bharti Airtel with around 93.92 million subscribers as on March 31, 2009, is the leading operator. Vodafone-Essar with 68.76 million connections is in the third slot.

“The overwhelming customer response to our recently launched nationwide GSM services has enabled us to bag 26 per cent marketshare and experience over 113 per cent growth in quarterly net additions. We are confident of further enhancing our leadership position through a series of consumer-centric initiatives that we will launch in the days ahead,” RCom President (Wireless Business) S P Shukla said.

The company added a total of 3 million subscribers in March, while it had added 3.3 million users during the previous month and 5 million in January 2009.
