Record jump in jute output

The highest rise has been experienced in sacking materials ( both A Twill and B Twill categories ) which went up to 1.14 million tonne in this jute year as against the previous year's 0.85 million tonne. Hessian, CBC and Yarn production went up to 0.35 million tonne, 0.6 million tonne and 0.18 million tonne from the earlier 0.25 million tonne, 0.28 million tonne and 0.16 million tonne respectively.

 

Alongside, despatches for internal consumption also registered a big jump by about 28 per cent to 1.54 million tonne in 2007-08 in comparison to 1.21million tonne in 2006-07. Here also sacking took the maximum share of despatch by clocking figures of 1.10 million tonne in 2007-08 as against 8.54 lakh tonne in 2006-07. Hessian followed with 0.27 million tonne from the previous 0.20 million tonne.

During this period CBC and Yarn and Twines were 1, 400 tonne and 93,700 tonne as against 400 tonne and 89,200 tonne of 2006-07. With the export market looking up during the current jute year, CBC, Yarns and Twines have registered a rise as maximum offtakes were from the US and European markets.

Despatches for exports during this period of 2007-08 also went up by 25 per cent to 2.07 lakh tonne from the previous 1.65 lakh tonne.

Figures compiled by the textile ministry, DGCI&S and the jute industry, however, reveals a reverse trend in the actual export of jute goods and its subsequent value during April to August 2006 and over the same period in 2007. In the case of actual export of jute goods, there is a fall by around 26 per cent from 1.31 lakh tonne in April-August 2006 to 1.04 lakh tonne between April - August 2007.

In terms of value, export of jute goods has come down by 14 per cent from Rs 526.3 crore in April- August 2006 to Rs 461.3 crore between April-August 2007.

As for opening stock of raw jute during the current years, the textile ministry's figures were 129 lakh bales as against 112 lakh bales ( revised ) in 2006-07 and 106 lakh bales ( revised ) in 2005-06. The crop size in the last three years stood at around 85 lakh bales (2005-06), 100 lakh bales ( 2006-07) and 97 lakh bales ( 2007-08).

The carry over during these three years were 8 lakh bales and 23 lakh bales respectively for consecutive two years.

Imports of the fibre during this jute years was around 9 lakh bales mostly from Bangladesh. In 2005-06 and 2006-07 import figures stood at around 7 lakh bales and 4 lakh bales respectively.

Opening stock with the mills at the mill godown is around 9 lakh bales and the Centre's raw jute procuring agency Jute Corporation of India ( JCI ) ( which also includes undelivered balance and mill purchase and jute held upcountry and transit), has a stock of around 3 lakh bales as against 1 lakh bale in 2006-07. In 2005-06 JCI had no stocks.
