After Uttar Pradesh, the Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Retail is facing opposition in Uttarkhand where vegetable markets remained shut today in protest against the corporate's entry into the food retail business.

Vegetable vendors in the state capital and other towns stayed away from the daily business, and wholesale markets, too, were closed today.

Traders submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister B C Khanduri saying the retail ventures of big firms would directly affect their business. They also threatened to launch an agitation if the government allowed organised retail players to open outlets in the state.

Reliance Fresh, the food retail store of Reliance Retail, is planning to open four outlets in Dehra Dun. It is not clear whether the big retailers would procure vegetables and fruits directly from farmers as the state does not have the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act in place.
