Rel Retail plans onion purchase at Lasalgaon

Reliance Retail (RRL), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries (RIL), will submit an application shortly for licence to the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Nashik district for onion purchase for its proposed retail stores across the country.

RRL is planning to sell onions in its proposed retail stores with packing of 2kg, 5kg and 10kg.

B Y Holkar, secretary of Lasalgaon APMC, said: "RRL officials have made inquiries with us regarding purchase of onion, but they have still not given any proposal to us officially. RRL wants a licence for onion procurement at Lasalgaon APMC. The company wants to purchase onion of good quality from here, and supply it to their proposed retail stores across the country. The company officials said they will soon submit an application for licence, and we have assured them full co-operation."

Nashik district is a major onion market in the country. The district produces about 12 lakh metric tonne of onion per year (including all three crops - Kharif, Rangada and Rabi). An average of 1,500 tonne onion are sold daily at Lasalgaon APMC.
