Reliance Defence, wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, has applied for additional 16 Industrial licences. The licences are for manufacturing of heavy weapons, ammunition, explosives, missiles, small arms, electronic warfare, radars, armoured /amphibious vehicles, unmanned and C4IS Systems. The company has proposed to develop new manufacturing facilities in Gujarat and Maharashtra in a phased manner.
The company hopes these industrial licences will enable it to deliver to varying requirements of the Indian Armed Forces starting from small arms to missile systems and combat aircraft. When contacted, Reliance Defence spokesperson confirmed the company has applied for additional 16 licences.
Earlier, this month Reliance Defence had got Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion's conditional approval for 12 Industrial licences for manufacturing of aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, All Terrain Combat Vehicles (ATCV), night vision devices, sensors, navigation and surveillance equipment, propulsion systems and simulators.
Reliance Defence also plans to set up Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul (MRO) and upgrades of various platforms. MRO enables operators to achieve faster turnaround times, savings in operating costs thereby enhancing the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces. These set ups will also cater to a global market.
The Reliance Group is in the process of acquiring controlling stake in Pipavav Defence & Offshore Engineering Company (PDOC) in Gujarat. The company will undertake large programs for refit and life extension of submarines, production of new frigates, landing Platform docks and aircraft carrier.
