Reliance Retail (RRL), the wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is thinking onion procurement for its proposed retail stores across the country. |
The company is expected to submit its application for the licence with the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Nashik. |
To cater to the mass market and the luxury segment through an array of international and Indian brands, Reliance Retail has decided to open retail stores in 1,500 cities and towns in the country in few years, with Rs 25,000 crore investment. |
Beverages, foods, vegetables and onions could be purchased from these outlets. RRL is planning to procure onions from the Lasalgaon APMC. The company is also planning to sell onions through its proposed retail stores with packing of 2kg, 5kg and 10kg. |
Speaking to Business Standard, BY Holkar, secretary, Lasalgaon APMC, said, RRL has only made inquiries with us regarding purchase of onion, but officially they have still not given any proposal to us. |

Nashik district is the major onion market in the country. The district produces about 12 lakh metric tonne of onions per year. It Has three varieties: Kharip, Rangada and Rabi. Lasalgaon is the major market of the district with the sale of 1,500 tonne onions daily. |
