Renault India on Friday began its exports of its first batch of sports utility vehicle (SUV) Duster from the port of Ennore, near Chennai. The company exported 350 cars to the UK. It introduced the SUV five months before, saying it had delivered 19,000 units.

Chennai will become a hub for right-hand drive cars, the company said.

Marc Nassif, MD, Renault India, said the first consignment was for the UK and Ireland, Renault India.

"The Oragadam facility, near Chennai is currently the only facility globally to produce the right-hand drive Duster, which will be sold in the domestic market as well as exported from here. India will be the right-hand hub for Renault," said Nassif.

He added the Duster was launched in the domestic market in July and around 19,000 units were sold till November.

The Duster exported will be available in both variants and has undergone modifications to meet individual market regulations.

"Duster is moving, rocking and something special we offer for Indian market and opened up new segment in India, which is the priority market for us".

Nassif said no brand so far delivered five cars in 16-17 months, which Renault did.
