What is open interest? Open interest (OI) position in futures and options indicate market-wide participation of derivative players. An increase in open interest with call-put ratio of less than one indicates oversold positions for the markets where as the call-put ratio above one indicates overbought position for the market. What happened on Thursday? Nifty futures was quoted at 30 points discount to the cash segment in early trades yesterday. The discount to Nifty futures reduced to 16.60 points at close as the spot Nifty gained 31.25 points as against 38.10 points gained by Nifty futures. Open interest in stocks and index futures moved up 11.22 million shares yesterday with Nifty futures adding 3.68 lakh shares. The OI in 49 futures has declined by 7.78 million shares today while it increased in 69 futures by 19.8 million shares. Open interest moved up in India Cement (17.74%), NTPC (11.75%), Ranbaxy (14.76%), GE Shipping (13.78%) and Suzlon Energy (31.42%) while it declined in Patni (-18.33%), HLL (-7.63%) and MTNL (-4.22%).
