Madhya Pradesh's first coal bed methane (CBM) power plant will soon be launched by Reliance Industries (RIL), official sources said today.
RIL has completed all formalities for setting up the power plant on a pilot project basis in Shahdol district in the state and would later start work for setting up three units of 410 Mw each for the 1,250 Mw plant, they said.
It would initially generate 20 Mw of electricity in a couple of months after completion to assess viability of the unconventional fuel for the plant, official sources said here.
CBM-based power production is a good alternative option for power generation, they said.
The pilot project would be powered by methane gas from the RIL's CBM fields in the district, they said.
Madhya Pradesh has huge deposits of methane gas reserves and about 3.6 trillion cubic feet of these reserves are estimated in Shahdol block that would be sold to industries around Sohangpur, sources added.
