Employees at the coal handling plant of Rourkela Steel Plant have successfully developed and implemented a new belt protection system that is expected to save Rs 81 lakh annually for the firm, a unit of SAIL.

A team of employees of the coal handling plant decided to minimise the damage of belt conveyor and implemented a belt protection system on selected damage prone belts, RSP sources said today.

About 3,000 metres of belt worth Rs 1.5 crore is used by the RSP every year, the sources said.

After implementation of the belt protection system in selected vital conveyors, damage and consumption of belts has been reduced up to 60%, which is expected to save about Rs 81 lakh annually for RSP, they said.

For performing the entire pre-carbonisation techniques, belt conveyors are used as vital equipment.

Belt conveyor is highly maintenance prone as well as fire prone and due to the absence of any specific belt protection system earlier, a large quantity of belts used to get damaged, the sources said.
