In the first four months (April-July) of the current fiscal, Rourkela Steel Plant, a unit of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), continued to operate its major production facilities well over the rated capacity.
The steel plant produced 1.095 million tonnes of sinter, 0.727 million tonnes of hot metal, 0.666 million tonnes of crude steel and 0.663 million tonnes of saleable steel corresponding to 107%, 109%, 105% and 113% of rated capacity.
During this period the steel plant also achieved despatches of 0.623 million tonnes of saleable steel.
The plant has recorded higher production in hot metal and saleable steel during April – July 2010, compared to the corresponding period of last year.
The finishing units achieved production levels of 1,57,120 tonnes of plate mill plates, 2,28,187 tonnes of hot rolled coils for sale, 1,01,122 tonnes of hot rolled plates, 16,138 tonnes of ERW pipes, 10,741 tonnes of SW pipes, 50,540 tonnes of cold rolled coils/sheets, 3,193 tonnes of tin plates, 39,897 tonnes of galvanised sheets and 26,168 tonnes of CRNO steel.
With a view to improve its profitability the steel plant had commenced the fiscal with the strategy of maximising production volumes to bring down the cost of production while focusing on improving techno economic parameters.
In this direction production in the primary zone was maintained above the rated capacity and all time best April – July performance was achieved in the coke rate with 531 Kg per tonne of hot metal besides energy consumption of 6.956 Giga Calories per tonne of crude steel.
