Press Trust of India Rourkela
Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of the Maharatna company SAIL, has commenced FY14 on a positive note by recording best-ever hot metal and crude steel production in April.

RSP produced 1.93 lakh tonnes of hot metal, 1.78 lakh tonnes of crude steel and 1.61 lakh tonnes of saleable steel thereby fulfilling 117.5%, 114.5% and 117.7% of its capacity utilisation respectively, RSP sources said today.

Besides, the steel plant also produced 39,321 tonnes of plate mill plates, 10,738 tonnes of CR sheets/coils and 5,005 tonnes of CRNO steel thereby registering a growth of 4.8%, 85.9% and 16.29% over the corresponding period last year, they said.

Modernisation and Expansion activities are also going on in full swing in RSP. A major highlight of the month was the commencement of coke pushing from the new state-of-the-art coke oven battery No.6.

The Coke Dry Cooling Plant (CDCP), Coal Handling Plant as well as Coal Chemicals unit have also become operational simultaneously.

Another important achievement  of the month was the production of 49,779 tonnes of sinter by the new sinter unit. This has become possible due to the supply of raw material from the new raw material circuit of ore bedding and blending plant phase-II.

The test and trial runs of new units like Blast Furnace-5, Power Blowing Station and New Caster are in progress and the units are likely to be put into operation soon.

To meet the enhanced power requirement, the 220 KV bays at Tarkera Grid Sub- Station and the 220 KV double circuit transmission lines from the sub-station to MSDS-IV of RSP have been energised successfully, sources said.
