Russia and Norway have approached the government in support of their telecom companies, which were among those impacted by the Supreme Court order on cancellation of 122 2G licences, Parliament was informed today.

"Russian Government and Norwegian Government have approached this Government," Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

Sibal said Russian government understands the issue but has expressed concern while Norwegian government has sought an interaction on the issue.

"Russian Government has conveyed that Sistema Shyam Telecommunications (SSTL) has invested over $3 billion in the telecom sector, but its licences has been cancelled due to some legal problems which they understand but this is a matter of serious concern for its investors," Sibal said.

The minister further said that Norwegian government has sought an interaction to discuss the verdict of the Supreme Court on the cancellation of the 2G licences which involves the Norwegian company Telenor.

The Supreme Court in February cancelled 122 2G licences that were issued in January 2008. These included 21 licences of SSTL and 22 licences of Unitech Wireless, in which Norwegian firm Telenor has over 67% stake.
