Our Corporate Bureau New Delhi
Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) expects an annual saving of Rs 20 crore by using electricity generated at its captive power plant at the Durgapur Steel Plant in the Bhilai Steel Plant.

SAIL is the first industrial enterprise in India to transmit surplus electrical power generated from one captive power plant to another unit, across different states.

The Rs 20 crore saving is the difference between the cost of power generation at Durgapur and the price of purchased power.

Transmission of 20 MW of power commenced yesterday from SAIL's 2x60 MW captive power plant at Durgapur Steel Plant to Bhilai Steel Plant.

Besides, it would also improve reliability of power supply by the Durgapur plant due to continuous running of both the 60 MW units.

This has been made possible due to the open access transmission system provision under the Electricity Act, 2003, which allows transmission of power between captive power plants of companies located across the country.
