After showing keen interest to establish a port in Orissa coast, public sector steel giant SAIL is planning to set up a power plant and another greenfield steel mill somewhere in eastern India.
This was disclosed by SAIL's Director (Technical), V K Gulhati at the sileline of a seminar here. "We are holding discussion with L & T for setting up a 1000 MW capacity coalfired power plant," he said
Stating that the SAIL was yet to identify location for the proposed power plant, Gulhati said the project would be pit-headed. Therefore, it would be set up at a place close to the coal mines, he said.
Not ruling out possibility of setting up the proposed power plant somewhere in Orissa, Gulahati said SAIL had applied for coal blocks at different places.
SAIL which presently consumed about 800 MW of power to operate its steel plants, could require about 2,000 MW of power after expansion of its different brownfield projects at Rourkela, Bokaro and Vilai.
Quoting the public sector's vision-2020 document, Gulhati said while the capacity of SAIL's Bhilai plant would be raised to 7.5 mtpa from 5 mtpa, plans were also afoot to increase the capacity of Bokaro plant from 4.5 mtpa to 7 mtpa.
Similarly, the capacity of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) would be 4.5 mtpa from its existing two mtpa by 2020, he said.
