Sandip Das quits Hutch, joins Maxis as CEO

Deputy managing director of Hutchison-Essar, Sandip Das, has resigned after a 13-year stint with the GSM major. Das has resigned to pursue an opportunity with Malaysian telecom major Maxis Communications, where he will be a part of the company's global operations and its CEO.

Das would continue to work with the company for another month, serving his notice period, before he takes up the new assignment. The company is yet to name a replacement, which would be announced "shortly", sources close to the development told Business Standard.

Despite several attempts, Das could not be contacted for his comments.
Sandip Das, who had served in various capacities like regional head, executive director and chief executive officer of the company, was named deputy MD in November 2004. The appointment was pursuant to a major rehauling of the company's top management structure.

At the time of resignation, Das was second in command after managing director Asim Ghosh for Hutchison Essar group, India. Along with Ghosh, he also shared the responsibilities of the company's expansion and investment plans and day-to-day operations. He was also CEO of Mumbai circle, which was later passed on to Naveen Chopra, who had joined the company from Britannia Industries.

Das is expected to join Maxis by mid-January and would be part of the company's global business operations. Apart from Malaysia, Maxis has also a considerable presence in Singapore and Hong Kong apart from in India were it is a major stake holder in mobile company Aircel.
