Sweden-based Euro 7.8 billion heavy vehicle major Scania has entered the Indian construction equipment market with the launch of its multi-axle tipper truck.

The company has entered into a distribution agreement with Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) exclusively for the Indian market.

To begin with Scania will sell its P380 CB 8X4 multi-axle tipper truck for mining applications in India and later expand its product range depending on the market response, Mikael Kyander, sales director, Scania said.

Under the agreement, L&T will import the tipper chassis from Scania and the body will be built by Hiva, a body building company based in Mumbai, he said.

The tipper truck was launched at Excon 2007, the ongoing international exhibition of earthmoving and construction equipment on the outskirts of Bangalore.

"In India, as in many other countries, small-scale mining is expanding. Mine operators are increasingly investing in trucks instead of the larger, more capital-intensive transport vehicles traditionally used," Kyander told Business Standard.
