Visakhapatnam Steel Plant sold 1.33 million tonne of saleable steel in the first six months of the current financial year. This was mainly on the back of record sales in September that stood at 350,000 tonnes, 70 per cent higher compared with the same period last year.
Production of liquid steel increased 5 per cent during the April-September period, with a cumulative production of 1.7 million tonnes. The cumulative production of saleable steel comprising wire rods, re-bars, rounds, re-rollables and structurals also rose to 1.5 million tonnes during the first half of current fiscal.
Production of value-added steel was up 13 per cent in September to 200,000 tonne as against the same period in 2009. During the six-month period this was at 1.15 million tonnes, the best for any half year since inception, according to a release.
VSP saved about Rs 50 crore during the first half of the current financial year by initiating several cost-cutting measures.
The company also commissioned the first phase of raw material handling plant and is set to commission the first stage of expansion during the current financial year. For the next phase of expansion to 11 million tonne per annum, tender had been issued for engaging a consultant for preparing the feasibility report.
