Six of the 127 cement plants in the country, including the Cement Corporation of India in Assam, are reported to be non-compliant with the prescribed pollution standards, the Lok Sabha was told today.

The defaulter list also includes Jamul Cement Works of ACC in Chattisgarh, Bagalkot Cement and Industries in Karnataka and Travancore Cements in Kerala, Minister of State for Finance, Namo Narain Meena, currently holding charge of environment ministry said in reply to a query.

The other firms are Orient Cement in Andhra Pradesh and Keymore Cement Works of ACC in Madhya Pradesh, the minister added.

While the plant of ACC in Chattisgarh has been issued directions under Section 5 of the Environment Act, the remaining five have been served with directions under section 18(1)(b) of Water and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, he said.

"There are two cement plants owned by Jay Pee at Rewa in Madhya Pradesh under the names of Jay Pee Bela cement and Jay Pee Rewa cement plant.

"The former was found to be marginally exceeding the emission standards for which the State Pollution Board was asked to take corrective steps," Meena added.
