To focus on south India, especially on Tamil Nadu and K'taka.
SK Bikes Private Limited, a Ludhiana-based cycle manufacturer, is in the process of setting up an automatic painting plant at Ludhiana with an investment of Rs 5 crore.
“Post the expansion, which will be completed in the next one year, the company’s production capacity will go up to 3,000 bicycles per day. This will enable the company to become the third largest bicycle producer in the country,” Sachin Lakra, executive director of SK Bikes, said here on Sunday.
SK Bikes, which manufactured 600,000 units last year becoming the fifth biggest bicycle producer in the country, currently has a daily production capacity of 2,000 units. “With the increasing demand for our products, the capacity will be increased to 2,500 units shortly,” he said.
Lakra said the company would be focusing on south India, especially on Tamil Nadu and Karnataka “as these two states are purchasing over 500,000 bicycles every year for free distribution to girl students under Sarvasiksh Abhiyan.” Under this programme, all states put together are distributing 2 million free bicycles a year to school-going girls.
According to Rajesh Kapoor, director (sales), SK Bikes, the company had sold about 600,000 bicycles last year and aims to sell 700,000 units in the current financial year.
The seven-year-old company reported sales turnover of Rs 100 crore in the last financial year. It expects to register a 25 per cent growth in the current financial year.
