Slumdog Millionaire inched closer to the Oscars after winning the “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles today.
The rags-to-riches story of a slum dweller in Mumbai who goes on to win $20 million in a reality game show has already received 10 Oscar nominations, including 3 nominations for the music composer of the film, A R Rahman.
The film, directed by British director Danny Bolye, also swept four Golden Globe two weeks ago, with India getting its first Globe in A R Rahman’s composition ‘Jai Ho’.
Slumdog..., which is based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup’s novel ‘Q and A’, has now consolidated its position a favourite to win at the Oscars that will be held on February 22.
On Saturday night, the movie also won the Producers’ Guild of America Award, with the movie’s British producer Christian Coulson being named producer of the year, Los Angeles Times reported.
At SAG, actor Anil Kapoor, who plays the TV game show host, accepted the award along with co-actors Dev Patel and Freida Pinto and said it was overwhelming enough just to be nominated.

“But to win this is unbelievable..It's unbelievable...,” he said.
The other films which were nominated for this category were Milk, Frost/ Nixon, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Doubt.
