Without waiting for the board of directors to meet, the chairman of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which owns and markets the Amul brand of dairy products, said he’d accepted the resignation of Managing Director B M Vyas and appointed R S Sodhi, chief general manager, to replace him.

“Vyas had handed me his resignation a few days ago, requesting me to relieve him from June 30. GCMMF’s business was getting affected due to uncertainty over the appointment of the new MD. To further prevent this, I accepted Vyas’ resignation today and appointed Sodhi as an incharge managing director,” said Parthi Bhatol, chairman of GCMMF.

Asked if he had got the board’s consent, he said: “The board has the power to appoint the new MD. They can retain Sodhi as MD or some other suitable candidate.”

On whether the board would approve Vyas’ resignation, Bhatol said it could also be rejected. If that happened, the matter could also become a legal wrangle.

Despite repeated attempts, both Vyas and Sodhi remained unavailable for comment.

There is already a problem within the 13-member board, with a group wanting Bhatol to step down as chairman. A meeting of the board has had to be adjourned twice for want of attendance.
