With software piracy levels reaching to the top in the last decade, companies in the sector are getting more aggressive to combat this menace. Not only are they taking recourse to stricter anti-piracy measures but are also co-ordinating with government agencies.
The International Planning and Research Corporation, which did an analysis for software piracy, found that in 2001 software piracy globally increased to 40 per cent, up from 37 per cent in 2000. Significantly, India has one of the highest piracy rates worldwide, up at 70 per cent in 2001 from 63 per cent logged in 2000.
Companies such as Adobe, Autodesk and Macromedia, in tandem with domestic industry body like Nasscom and Business Software Alliance at the global level, are also independently pursuing initiatives in a bid to stem the drain on their legitimate revenues.
