Steel companies come ahead to help Phailin affected victims

Tata Steel provides food, shelter at its education centre

The district administration of Odisha has sought help from some of the large steel companies in order to set up relief centres for cyclone affected victims at various areas in the state.

Under the guidance of the administration, Tata Steel Ltd and Essar Steel Ltd are actively carrying out relief measures by providing food and shelter to the victims of cyclone Phailin.

Tata Steel’s J N Tata Technical Education Centre located in Gopalpur district is currently providing shelter to over 300 people.

Gopalpur was slammed by the cyclonic storm at 9.15 pm on Saturday, triggering heavy rains and strong winds with speed reaching up to 200 km an hour.

“Over 300 people from low-lying areas have been brought to the institute for shelter and have been living there,” said a company source close to the development.

At the Ganjam district in Odisha, another region which bore the brunt of the storm, Tata Steel has distributed about 3,500 food packets for the victims.

As per directions from the district administration, Essar Steel has also provided food for about 500-700 people near Paradip area. “We (Essar Steel) have also arranged for earth moving equipments needed to clear the debris in times of calamity of this kind,” said a company source.

The company has also supplied diesel generators for hospitals in the affected area just in case of power cut due to the cyclone, he said. Essar Steel runs a 6 mln tonne per annum pellet plant at Paradip and is in the process of adding another 6 mln tonne per annum capacity at the existing facility.

Tata Steel is also setting up a 3 mln tonne steel plant at Kalinganagar in the state.
