Steel industry should go for green tech: SAIL chief

There is a need to embrace green technologies for healthy growth of the steel industry, SAIL Chairman CS Verma said today.

"There is an immediate need for consensus building among stakeholders... For ensuring the growth of the steel industry and bringing about green steel making," Verma who is also chairman of the CII National Committee on Steel said.

Speaking at the CII National Committee meeting, he said the industry should adapt best-in-class technology and global best practices to remain globally competitive, a CII statement said.

The statement added that the manufacturing industry as a whole contributed about 21% of the total green house emission of the world.

 

"Of this, 15% is contributed by the steel industry of the world which really means that about 3 to 4% of the total CO2 emissions of the world is contributed by the steel industry," it said adding that green initiatives could lower the harmful emissions.
