BS Reporter Bhubaneswar
For realising the vision of 'Make in India' programme, the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) , under the Department of Electronics & Information Technology, Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, has stepped up efforts for creation of an congenial ecosystem in the country for the ESDM (electronic system design and manufacturing) sector.

"One of the objectives is to produce indigenous hardware and software to meet the domestic demands and also to export such products. In software, there is already an ecosystem in place. We are working for completing the entire ecosystem for the electronics sector to realise the vision of the Make in India so that reliance on the imports can be reduced, more jobs can be created and domestic requirements can be met," Omkar Rai, director general, STPI told media persons here.

STPI is setting up a characterization facility for testing of chips at Karnataka that is likely to give a boost to the ESDM sector and a similar lab is being set up at Bhubaneswar, the second one in the country after Karnataka.

The Union government has formulated a host of schemes like Electronic Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme that supports creation of world-class infrastructure for attracting investments in the ESDM sector, the Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS) among others. STPI is focusing more on entrepreneurial development in the field of ESDM sector providing other support services, he added.

To boost domestic manufacturing of electronics and encourage entrepreneurship, STPI has set up an incubation centre at Delhi University. An electronics incubation centre is also planned in Odisha.
