Sundergarh leads districts in large and medium industries

Keeping pace with the ongoing industrialisation process, 42,002 Small Scale Industries (SSIs) were registered in the state between 200-01 and 2008-09. This apart, 235 medium and large industries were also registered during this period.

While the maximum number of large and medium enterprises is proposed to come up in Sundergarh district, Cuttack boasted of the highest number of SSIs, sources said.

In the large and medium category, 72 industries were registered in Sundergarh district, followed by 27 units in Keonjhar and 18 in Jharsuguda. While 16 industries came up in Sambalpur district, 17 large and medium industries were registered in Cuttack district. However, not a single large and medium industry was registered in Kendarapara, Puri, Gajapati, Phulbani, Boudh, Sonepur, Nuapada and Malkangiri. On the other hand, the highest number of 5376 SSIs was registered in Cuttack district followed by 3978 in Sundergarh and 3705 in Khurda by the end of March 2009. The number of SSIs in Ganjam, which has 3 large and medium category industries, is pegged at 3426.

 

Sources said, among the companies which signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Orissa government for setting up steel projects, the highest number of industries (10) will be located in Keonjhar district. It includes big names like Arcelor-Mittal, Sterlite Iron and Steel Company and Uttam Galva Steels.

This is followed by eight industries in Jajpur district. The companies which have their projects located in the district include Visa Industries, Tata Steel, Jindal Stainless among others. Seven industries each are set to come up in Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh districts.
