In view of the growing demand, Surya Roshni Ltd will invest Rs 21 crore to set up a manufacturing unit of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in Malanpur (near Gwalior), District Bhind. The company already has a unit in Malanpur that produces lighting products.

The company, according to a government source, "will manufacture 2 million compact fluorescent lamps per month. The company is expecting to complete the first phase of manufacturing 1 million pieces by August and the second phase for the rest by December this year."

At present, Surya Roshni Ltd either outsources compact fluorescent lamps outside India or from domestic manufacturers. Available in the 15 watt and 20 watt versions, compact fluorescent lamps provide the same illumination as of higher watt incandescent light bulbs.

These power-saving lamps consume up to 80 per cent less power than the incandescent bulbs. "A plot of land has been allotted to the company and it will set up the unit soon," said the source.

The easy-to-install flicker-free-start CFLs, which can withstand a wide voltage range and last 3 years at the rate of 4 hours per day, are in good demand in the market.

These lamps are suitable for use in homes, offices, shops, showrooms, hotels, restaurants, etc. With the trend shifting from conventional incandescent bulbs to CFLs, Surya sees good potential to explore in the domestic as well global markets.

Surya will set up four assembly lines of CFL, each of a capacity of 500,000 pieces per month and will also set up a production line of printed circuit board, assembly machines to assemble other parts like tubes, printed circuit boards, plastic cover and aluminium caps.

Surya is planning to run the unit on the available land, allotted by the Audyogik Kendra Vikas Nigam Ltd, Gwalior. It will use natural gas as energy for the power plant.

The lighting product division of Surya manufactures fluorescent lamps, halogen lamps, special purpose lamps, etc. at its Malanpur unit.
