Tata Group plans to expand their aviation business by foraying into maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft. The MRO will be part of a joint venture between the Tatas and Hong Kong-based Metrojet.

Tata Group’s aviation business functions under the Taj Air brand, which has a fleet of four aircraft, comprising three Falcon jets and one Avanti turbo prop plane.

Taj Air carries out maintenance checks of its own planes and Falcon jets belonging to GVK, GMR and other corporates at its hangar in Mumbai. “At present, earnings from maintenance and overhaul work are negligible. We are looking at expansion and are setting up the joint venture company,’’ a source in the know said without divulging details. A Taj Air spokesperson, however, did not respond to an email query.
